Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy has been around for thousands of years and practiced in several different cultures. It has evolved over the many years into a very diverse approach to health care. Massage Therapist in Ontario are some of the highest trained in the world. An RMT (Registered Massage therapist) will have an extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, soft tissue injury, rehabilitation, and prevention.
During a typical Massage therapy treatment you can expect a brief interview and assessment to enable the therapist to provide a safe and effective treatment that will best suit your goals as a client, whether it be therapeutic, prevention, or just simply relaxation. Therapeutic treatments focus on releasing and relaxing muscles and connective tissue that could be contributing to pain and discomfort from an injury or even just day to day life. So whether you are looking for a light relaxation massage, pain relief, injury prevention, rehabilitation, a Therapist can design the right approach for you.
Massage Therapy can be beneficial in the treatment of several chronic pain syndromes, sprains, strains, muscular spasms, nerve impingement syndromes (such as carpal tunnel and sciatica), scoliosis, osteoarthritis, sports injuries, depression, headaches, and several others.
The proven effects of Massage therapy has forced most extended health care insurance plans to offer coverage for massage. Please note some plans require a Doctors referral. Only an RMT can issue you an insurance receipt. For more information on Massage Therapy in Ontario check out www.cmto.com or www.omta.com.

What is The Rolf Method of Structural integration?
Structural Integration (also referred to as Rolfing) works by opening, lengthening, and softening restrictive fascia through hands-on soft tissue manipulations. Fascia plays a very important structural role in the body. The fascia works as a thin sheet of connective tissue that holds everything together and surrounds muscles and other tissues in your body. When it shortens and tightens it can pull the bones, organs, and muscles it attaches to out of alignment. Healthy fascia is essential for correct posture and overall health.
Structural Integration (SI) uses a series of 10 sessions to bring lasting changes to the body. Each session is different; cumulatively they balance your body and movements by releasing lifelong patterns of effort, compensation, tension, and strain.
Dr. Ida P Rolf developed SI after her search for answers to personal and family health problems. Medical treatment available at that time seemed inadequate to her; this led to her exploration of osteopathy, chiropractic medicine, yoga, and the Alexander technique. By the late 1930.s Dr. Rolf designed the 10 sessions of Structural Integration that we still practice today.
Benefits
The process of SI is an individual and personal process benefits are different person to person. In general, clients notice improved posture, balance, increased joint range of motion, decrease in pain, increase in body awareness, and more fluidity, efficiency and grace with movement.
How to prepare for sessions
Clients should bring a tank top and shorts for their treatments. Heavy meals should be avoided right before each session. Clients should drink more water than usual during their SI process to help with the effects. No changes to daily activities are required. However, increased body awareness and should be applied to daily activities. Slight soreness in the targeted areas can occur after the treatments this is normal and even beneficial. Sessions range from 60 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the client.s health and responsiveness. Sessions are usually once a week to once a month. Other bodywork therapies such as Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, Pilates, Yoga, and Physiotherapy can be done in conjuction with and are very complimentary to SI.
SI is contraindicated for those with blood clotting disorders infections, fevers, acute inflammation and recent trauma. Some forms of rheumatoid arthritis, severe osteoporosis or osteomyelitis are also contraindicated.
Will my insurance cover it?
If your insurance covers Massage Therapy then it will cover SI. SI falls under the scope of practice of Massage Therapy; therefore insurance receipts are offered as long as a Registered Massage Therapist conducts the sessions. Marta Hanrahan practices both therapies and can write Massage Therapy insurance receipts for SI.
